IBS quick tip. Don't lie down right after a meal
Why? Because your entire gut is smooth muscle tissue...
Don’t lie down right after you eat.
Instead, try to be mildly active after meals, even that means just pacing around the house, doing the dishes, or taking an easy walk.
Pretty much anything that keeps you upright and moving is better than lying down immobile on a full stomach.
Why? Because your entire gut is smooth muscle tissue.
Gentle physical activity will work the muscles of the bowels and help get them into a pattern of normal contractions. This is especially helpful right after you eat.
With IBS, your gut motility by definition is dysfunctional. That disrupted motility is especially likely to happen after eating sets off your gastrocolic reflex.
Just some easy walking and light stretching after a meal can help keep your gastrocolic reflex - and your bowel’s reaction to it - stable and calm.
It’s one of the little things that can make a big difference with IBS.
You are not alone.
