So-called “gut health” sodas are suddenly everywhere, including new versions by the big boys Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.
These soft drinks are marketed as having health benefits and supporting a good gut microbiome. Is this just hype?
Lisa Jones, MA, RDN, LDN, FAND, a registered dietitian in Philadelphia, sums up my feelings:
Don't let the bubbles fool you. While some of these sodas contain probiotics or prebiotics, many just slap a trendy label on fizzy water. They still have added sugars or artificial sweeteners, and the carbonation can upset stomachs and trigger bloating.
Honestly, the entire phrase “gut healthy sodas” is an oxymoron.
Get safe drinks for IBS instead…
