Going out and about sometimes can be scary with IBS. What if you have an attack away from home? What if you can’t find a bathroom?
And if you’re out on a date? Those fears can become overwhelming.
So here’s my ideal IBS-friendly night out!
I start early, late afternoon instead of evening.
I’m already well rested from the night before and I’ve had a good week.
I’ve had a nice safe breakfast and lunch today.
I take my Tummy Tamers capsules, on an empty stomach, right before I leave the house.
I’m wearing: comfy soft stretchy breathable layers, with an elastic - or no - waistband. And comfy shoes for walking.
First up - cocktail and sushi bar. Lots of low fat, trigger free, safe foods options.
It’s early so the place is not crowded, steamy, or noisy.
I’m drinking: virgin mojitos (fresh mint, a digestive aid, is muddled right into them).
I’m eating: edamame and side of white rice ordered first, gotta get that soluble fiber in my gut asap.
Then I’m eating: a variety of seafood and veggie sushi rolls. NOT deep fried, NOT slathered with mayo.
How do I eat? Leisurely. The evening started early so I am not in a rush at all.
And I’m also drinking: a little green tea with the meal.
Next up - an easy walk around the sushi bar neighborhood, just sauntering, because moving along gently like this after a meal keeps my gut gently moving too.
Then it’s time for a movie. Something funny and light. Not stressful, ultra loud, or depressing. If I want dessert now it’ll be Junior Mints or Red Vines, safe concession candies.
Otherwise, after the movie it’s a dessert cafe.
I’m eating: angel food cake with fresh strawberries. Angel food is fat free, dairy free, and delicious.
I’m drinking: high volatile oil peppermint tea (cafe doesn’t have any? no problem, I carry a few teabags in my purse just in case).
After that, maybe another short walk, then home before it’s past bedtime.
Once at home I still have a little time to relax, read, maybe drink more peppermint tea, and I can get to bed on time.
The next morning I sleep in.
My perfect IBS date night!
Tomorrow, it’s my worst IBS date night scenario!
